Mr. Soap Passed Away, But His Legacy Lives On

Behind every bar of Mirai Clinical Persimmon Soap is a story of Japanese craftsmanship and knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

At the heart of that story was an artisan we lovingly called “Mr. Soap.”

He spent nearly 60 years making soap in Japan, including approximately 30 years specializing in deodorizing persimmon soap.

An Expertise Built Over Decades

Persimmon tannins require careful formulation and processing. They can be sensitive to how they interact with other ingredients, making experience especially important when creating a finished soap while preserving their intended deodorizing properties.

This was where his expertise mattered.

Through years of hands-on practice, he learned how to work with persimmon tannins while maintaining their intended efficacy in the finished product.

It wasn't something that could simply be learned from a recipe. It was knowledge developed through experience.

That craftsmanship became part of the foundation of our Mirai Clinical Japanese Persimmon Soap.

Passing His Craft to the Next Generation

As retirement approached, there was an important challenge:

How do you teach someone what your hands have learned over a lifetime?

Much of his technique had become instinctive. So he worked to pass his knowledge on to younger soap artisans at our factory in Japan.

He taught them his techniques and the standards needed to maintain the quality of the soap.

His craft was now in the hands of the next generation.

Just Two Weeks After Retirement

After spending most of his life making soap, Mr. Soap retired.

Just two weeks later, he passed away.

The news was heartbreaking and unexpected.

We cannot say that his retirement had anything to do with his passing. But the timing stayed with us.

For decades, he had somewhere to go each morning, something meaningful to create, and knowledge to share.

It made us think about the Japanese concept of Ikigai.

A Reason to Get Up in the Morning

Ikigai (生き甲斐) is often understood as something that gives life meaning, a reason to get up in the morning.

It doesn't have to be a career. It can be family, a hobby, helping others, creating something, or passing your knowledge to the next generation.

For this artisan, his craft had become an important part of his life.

His story reminds us that while we may retire from a career, we don't have to retire from having a purpose.

The Man Behind the Craft

We wish we had more photographs of him.

He wasn't someone who enjoyed being in front of the camera. He preferred working quietly behind the scenes, focused on his craft.

What he left us instead was something far more lasting:

his knowledge.

From Japan to the World

The younger artisans he taught continue carrying forward his techniques at our factory in Japan, helping preserve the craftsmanship and quality behind our soap.

But his legacy didn't stay in Japan.

Through Mirai Clinical, the soap rooted in that craftsmanship is now shared with customers around the world.

What began in the hands of one Japanese artisan was passed to another generation and is now reaching homes far beyond the factory where his story began.

For us, Mirai Clinical Persimmon Soap is more than a product. It carries a story of experience, purpose, and knowledge passed forward.

His hands may have stopped making soap, but his craft continues in the hands of the next generation.
