How to Check Your Own Body Odor: The T-Shirt Test

Koko Hayashi

You can't smell yourself. Your nose gets used to your own scent so gradually that you stop noticing it, even when others can. That's why a simple three-step test works better than trusting your own nose.

Step 1: Wear a T-shirt normally.

Step 2: Seal the T-shirt and wait for 15- 30 minutes.

Step 3: Clear your nose, then check.

Step 4: Open the bag and smell the T-shirt.

Why Age Changes Your Scent

One compound explains a lot of this: nonenal. It was first identified by Japanese researcher Shinichiro Haze and his team in a 2001 study. Nonenal has a distinct grassy smell, different from regular sweat odor, and it's the compound behind what's often called "age-related odor." It tends to show up gradually starting in our 40s, no matter how well we shower or how often.

Regular sweat odor comes from bacteria breaking down sweat and oil on the skin's surface, which is what most soaps and deodorants are built to fight. Nonenal is different. It comes straight from the skin's oil glands, no bacteria involved, which is exactly why antibacterial soap doesn't do much for it.

It's a natural change in skin oil as we age, as skin gradually loses some of its ability to fight this kind of change. It's simply part of getting older, not a sign of doing anything wrong.

What Actually Helps

Persimmon tannin.

Persimmon tannin binds to odor molecules and neutralizes them, which is why it's the key ingredient in Mirai Clinical's soap.

Lifestyle habits that support it.

Good sleep and lower stress matter too; both can show up as scent before you notice anything else. A healthy gut helps as well; yogurt and other fermented foods are an easy way to support it.
